"Boots on the Ground"... Let's Embrace Sustainability

The effects of climate change and environmental degradation are becoming increasingly evident in today's world. More people are looking for ways to engage in a greener way of living, benefiting both the planet and their health. Adopting sustainable practices doesn't have to be difficult or overwhelming—there are many simple ways to contribute to a more eco-friendly lifestyle while enjoying everyday life. In this post, we will explore practical actions you can take to positively impact the environment. "Where Them Fans At"?

Green Living: Starting with the Basics

Transitioning to a greener lifestyle starts with understanding the impact of our daily choices. Small steps can lead to significant changes when adopted by many. For instance, reducing water waste is crucial. Simple actions like taking shorter showers, fixing leaks, and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save gallons of water. According to the EPA, if every American home replaced just one faucet fixture, we could save up to 100 billion gallons of water annually. At Sassafras Farms, we have a septic system and well water. We love being able to pull directly from the earth the bounty that is given. We have a purifier to help clean the water we drink, and we practice conservation to ensure we do not overwork our septic system. Being a city girl, I was afraid of this foreign system of wells and septic systems. Now, it is my way of life. I can honestly say, I have not encountered any problems since my move 4 years ago. I practice my conservation habits as a proactive way to support our natural resources. As a family doc, it is important to prevent rather than hoping a cure will work. Prevention is the best offense in most cases--in life and health.

Additionally, minimizing plastic usage by opting for reusable bags, bottles, and containers can significantly decrease plastic pollution. It's estimated that a single person can use over 167 plastic water bottles every year. By switching to a reusable container, you not only save money but also contribute to reducing plastic waste in landfills and oceans. I must confess, I am still working on this. It is hard, given the convenience of disposable goods. If you just incorporate one new habit, you can do your part.

Incorporating Green Living into Your Routine

Integrating green practices into your daily routine can be enjoyable and fulfilling. Consider starting your morning with a cup of fair-trade coffee or tea. This not only supports sustainable farming but also ensures that your drinks are sourced ethically. You can also switch to organic produce, which is better for the environment and your health. Organic farming reduces chemical runoff and promotes biodiversity. We practice organic farming here at Sassafras Farms, but these weeds and the tenacity of their spirit of growth make me reconsider.

Another practical way to embrace green living is by reducing meat consumption. Even cutting back on meat just a few days a week—popularly known as "Meatless Monday"—can have a considerable impact. According to research, if everyone in the United States skipped just one meal of chicken per week, the greenhouse gas emissions would be equivalent to taking more than half a million cars off the road for a year.

How to Be Eco-friendly in Daily Life?

Being eco-friendly isn't limited to major lifestyle changes; it can also be woven into your daily habits. Here are some actionable tips to consider:

1. Opt for Sustainable Transportation

Whenever possible, choose walking, biking, carpooling, or public transit over driving alone. This reduces carbon emissions and lowers your ecological footprint. Biking or walking also promotes physical activity, making it a win-win for your health and the environment. In my community, there is no public transportation. If you live in rural USA, I recommend you try limiting your transit commute to once a week, thereby reducing emissions. Try making a grocery list to shop weekly, or try to order online and opt for delivery.

2. Conserve Energy at Home

Being energy-conscious in your home can lead to significant savings on your utility bills. Switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs, unplug devices that are not in use, and consider investing in a programmable thermostat. According to the Department of Energy, using LED bulbs can save you up to 75 percent on electricity when compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.

3. Buy Local and Seasonal Produce

Supporting local farms not only strengthens your community but also decreases the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances. Seasonal produce is often fresher and tastier. Join a local farmers' market or subscribe to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program to make this easier. We are working on building our program to support the community. Make sure to sign up for our email list to get information on the launch.

4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Follow the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Start by reducing your purchases and waste. Next, try to reuse items instead of discarding them. Finally, recycle materials like paper, plastic, and metal according to your local guidelines. Understanding local recycling rules can help you contribute to the process effectively. I am not aware of recycling in my area, but I am actively trying to change this. It may work if I get the right people to deliver the message.

5. Create a Garden

Starting a small garden, whether it's in your backyard, on your balcony, or even indoors, provides numerous benefits. Growing your fruits, vegetables, and herbs not only reduces your reliance on store-bought items but also offers a sense of accomplishment. Plus, you'll know exactly how your food was grown. I keep asking people to start with container gardening. You just need a "pot" amount of space. You can even just grow herbs on your kitchen countertop. We offer starter plants at the farm and seeds to help make it easy. Make sure you come and visit the Sassafras Scented Farmacy to get your first plant to get yourself well on your way. I promise, it may take a little bit of work, but it is so gratifying.

Raising Awareness and Involvement in Your Community

To further embrace a greener way of living, consider getting involved in community initiatives. Join or support local environmental groups that focus on sustainability issues, tree planting, or park cleanups. Participating in community efforts can inspire others to join in and multiply your impact. Organize workshops or events to educate others on the benefits of living sustainably.

Additionally, advocating for policies that promote sustainability at the local or national level can create broader changes. Educating your friends and family about environmental issues and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices creates a ripple effect in your community.

Making Long-term Commitments for the Future

Embracing a greener way of living is not just a passing trend; it requires ongoing commitment and effort. Set specific, realistic goals for yourself and your family. Assess your current lifestyle and identify areas for improvement. Whether it is reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, or supporting sustainable businesses, even small changes can lead to significant results over time. Pick one and go!!

Consider the importance of not only focusing on your efforts but also engaging with wider initiatives aimed at combating climate change. Supporting organizations that foster environmental sustainability is vital. Aligning with others who share your commitment makes a noticeable difference. It also helps keep you motivated. This does not require a huge effort, just connecting...online works.

Incorporating a few simple, actionable steps into your everyday routine can contribute tremendously to your journey towards a greener future. By doing so, you will not only promote a healthier planet but also enrich your life in the process. Embracing an eco-friendly lifestyle has never been more vital. Get started today and inspire your family and community to join you in making sustainable choices.

By becoming aware of the power each of us has, we can collectively contribute to preserving our planet for future generations. So, let’s take those small steps towards a greener, more vibrant world!
